A 2nd or Queens Bays Dragoon Guards Officers “Roman” Pattern Helmet Plate

An exceptionally rare officer’s helmet plate from the 1817 “Roman” pattern gold and black japanned helmet worn with a bearskin crest. The plate would have originally been attached to a rayed backing plate that in turn was rivoted to the skull of the helmet at the front just above the peak.
The plate retains much its original fire gilt finish and the reverse shows good evidence of fire gilt over spill , in itself a good authenticator of a genuine plate. Sadly the orb from the top of the crown has broken away but other than this the plate is in very good condition for its age. These plates are exceptionally rare as they seldom become detached from the helmet.
