James St. Vincent Broke Saumarez, 5th Baron de Saumarez was born on 29 November 1889. He was the son of James St. Vincent Saumarez, 4th Baron Saumrez and Jane Anne Vere-Broke. He married Gunhild Balck, daughter of Maj.-Gen. Sir Victor Gustaf Balck, on 30 April 1914 and died on 16 January 1969 at age 79.
James St. Vincent Broke Saumarez, 5th Baron de Saumarez was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, England. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.
He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Scots Guards and fought in the First World War, where he was wounded. He was Aide-de-Camp to Air Marshal 1st Viscount Trenchard between 1918 and 1919. He held the office of High Sheriff of Suffolk in 1932 and the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Suffolk between 1937 and 1964. He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Saumarez, in the Island of Guernsey on 25 April 1937. In 1946 he founded the Rhodesia Fairbridge College,
