Madras Horse Artillery Helmet Plate

An Officers Madras Horse Artillery helmet plate worn on the 1822 pattern helmet comprising an ornate chased design of the rampant HEIC lion over a shield with three cannons and flanked by a pair of horses. At the bottom of the plate are ribbons with the words Horse Artillery and in the centre a union spray comprising an acorn and oak leaf, a thistle and a rose and shamrock. At the top are two further ribbons with the battle honours for Java and Madipore
An exceptionally rare badge to find and overall in very nice condition. The gilt is fresh and has wear to the high points. The reverse is age discoloured and shows evidence of the snapped off wires that would have secured the plate to a larger rayed back plate which was then attached to the helmet.
