23rd or Royal Welch Fusiliers Shoulder belt Plate

An Officerís 23rd or Royal Welch Fusiliers shoulder belt plate worn between 1840 and 1855 comprising a gilt matted back plate with a burnished rim. The design on the plate was a large flaming grenade with a crowned circle on the ball, inscribed Royal Welch Fusiliers within the circle the roman numerals XXIII surmounted by the Prince of Walesís plume, coronet and motto ICH DIEN, the design mounted in dead gilt on a burnished grenade.
The reverse retains its original hooks and buttons and has an old brown leather liner, the back plate shows good gilt overspill and is age discoloured.
An extremely attractive belt plate in very nice condition.
