40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot Officers Shoulder belt Plate

A 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot Grenadier Company Officers shoulder belt plate worn between 1840 and 1855 and comprising a gilt brass back plate with traces of the original fire gilt on which resides a fourteen point hobnail star with the regiments many battle honors in each of the rays.
In the center is a garter strap with 2nd Somersetshire surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves with further battle honors and which would have been topped by a QVC crown now absent. At the bottom of the wreath there is provision for wat we beleive would have been sphinx. Minimal gilt now remains on the wreath and garter strap and in the center on a silver disc is a flaming grenade with the Arabic numerals for 40.
Overall condition is fair and would benefit from a good clean *
